Position Summary: Participates in the activities of the land surveying and performs other duties as assigned by the Survey Manager. The work is normally reviewed upon completion to ensure compliance with general organization/department goals, policies and procedures. Major work activities are covered by procedures or guidelines permitting flexibility in selecting methods to utilize and procedures to follow, determination of work priorities, and the planning and coordination of projects. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Participates in preplanning and post-planning of data from Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and like computer-based systems, programs, and equipment, in the establishment/re-establishment of boundary locations, land corners, survey markers and monuments per standards of the Public Land Survey System (PLSS). Gathers data by establishing and operating survey instruments and equipment, making observations, preparing notes of topographical features and as-built plans, understanding PLSS and related information, interpreting maps and specifications, and performing calculations. Prepares and maintains manual and computer-based records, sketches, maps, reports, electronic drawings and legal descriptions of surveys in order to correctly describe survey work performed. Identifies survey areas, locates markers, sets pins, hubs, benchmarks, stake pins and maintains a record of such. Calculates and converts data from survey information and create maps for distribution utlilizing AutoCAD, Civil 3-D software/programs Creates, submits and maintains activity and technical reports in manual and computer-based systems. Maintains and directs maintenance of security and confidentiality of information encountered or created in the performance of assigned duties. Interprets legal descriptions, subdivision plats, Records of Survey, maps and other survey information to facilitate survey projects. Performs other job related duties as assigned and contributes to a team effort. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions. Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements. Knowledge of principles, practices, methods, techniques and instruments of land surveying, mathematics and physical sciences. Knowledge of civil engineering principles and terminology of land surveying, including construction methods, engineering plans, specifications and mathematical calculations. Skill in operating various computer-based resources in surveying activities, i.e. computer-aided design/drafting (CAD/CADD), Geographic Information System (GIS), word-processing, spreadsheets, database software programs. Skill in interpreting and using engineering plans, maps, specifications and survey field notes. Skill in preparing, reviewing, and analyzing operational reports. Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers. Ability to apply training techniques. Ability to analyze information, draw logical conclusions and make sound recommendations. Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public. Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines. Ability to travel throughout the internal boundaries of the Nation. Ability to maintain privileged confidential information. Minimum Qualifications: Associates Degree in applicable field of study; and two years of work experience in applicable field or an equivalent combination of training, education, and work experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position. OR Five years of work experience in applicable field. Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements: Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background check is required to determine suitability for hire, including a 39-month Motor Vehicle Record. May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license, (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years). If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles. Based on the department's needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham Language and English as a condition of employment.
