Position Summary: Under close supervision, provides safe transportation of children to and from early childhood centers and designated school activities. Performs custodial duties for the early childhood centers; provides a clean, orderly and safe learning environment. The work is normally reviewed in progress and upon completion of each assignment to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and conformance to established standards; most aspects of the work tasks are covered by detailed instructions or procedures. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Provides transportation to and from designated school activities. Assists passengers as needed. Maintains transportation log and/or schedule of planned activities. Performs safety inspections on vehicles before operating to include: gas, oil, water, brake and transmission levels, and ensures safety operation of brake lights, turn signals, tire pressure, windshield wipers, first aid kits and emergency road kits. Maintains accurate documentation related to mileage, consumption of gas, oil, and other service related products. Maintains vehicle cleanliness by washing and cleaning. Sanitizes restrooms daily, restocks toilet paper, hand towels and ensures the hand soap is filled. Reports unsafe and unsanitary conditions of the restrooms to the supervisor: clogged drains, damage or broken items. Cleans inside and outside of buildings, sweeps, mops and scrubs floors daily; including vacuum carpets, wipes, and dusts furniture. Performs other job related duties as assigned and contributes to a team effort. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge in the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions. Knowledge of applicable Federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements. Knowledge of rules of the road and road signage. Knowledge of preparation of age appropriate learning and socialization activities. Knowledge of practices and methods of cleaning equipment, rooms, and furnishings. Knowledge of cleaning equipment and materials, including toxic chemicals. Skill in safely transporting Head Start program students to and from their homes. Skill in providing superior customer service for both internal and external customers. Skill in administering disciplinary rules to children and resolving situational conflicts among children. Ability to make decisions in a variety of situations regarding priorities and effectively handling emergencies. Ability to drive safely and efficiently. Ability use a variety of hand tools in performing minor maintenance on assigned vehicles. Ability to exercise independent judgment. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, and the general public. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines. Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules. Ability to travel within the interior/exterior boundaries of the Tohono O'odham Nation. Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or General Education Diploma, and six months work experience in driving transportation vehicles and some experience in custodial services, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and work experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position. Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements: Must obtain certifications in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid within the first six months of hire. Current Food Handler's card required-may be obtained within the first six months of hire. Must satisfy health requirements as defined by the federal program standards. Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background and National FBI check is required to determine suitability for hire, including a 39-month Motor Vehicle Record. May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license, (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years). If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles. Based on the department's needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham Language and English as a condition of employment.
