The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) is seeking a Chief Operating and Finance Officer. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Operating and Finance Officer is a key advisor to the CEO to ensure the organization's strategic direction is recognized through efficient financial frameworks. The Chief Operating and Finance Officer provides leadership to build and maintain effective and efficient processes and procedures in the business operations of the organization. As a member of the Executive Team, the Chief Operating and Finance Officer will lead with a strengths-based approach to building an organizational culture that is thriving; contribute to the development of NAEYC's strategic priorities and desired results and to the daily leadership and management of the organization. The Chief Operating and Finance Officer will successfully leverage creative and innovative strategies to develop and effectively operationalize a vision. This position plays a key role in leading and collaborating across several business divisions to develop and implement thoughtful and thorough business decisions, effective processes and systems that deliver functional excellence with a customer service orientation. NAEYC is a professional membership organization with 80+ employees across the United States, maintains an innovative environment deeply focused on vision, mission, values and beliefs, and works to promote high-quality early learning for each and every child, birth through age 8, by connecting early childhood practice, policy, and research. NAEYC advances a diverse, dynamic early childhood profession and supports all who care for, educate, and work on behalf of young children. Key Responsibilities Partner with the CEO to provide leadership and management of the organization, and collaborate with the Executive Team to discuss, contribute to and finalize organizational priorities, strategies and desired results Engage with members of the Executive Team to facilitate cross-department collaboration that ensures all financial and operational solutions, and new programs positively support NAEYC's organizational objectives, operational delivery, data collection, legal risk mitigation, and analysis needs Lead the development of short- and long-term strategic financial objectives; advise the CEO, Executive and Leadership teams on status, financial planning and performance, budgeting, accounting, cash flow, investment priorities, audits and policy matters Provide management and direct the work of teams in Finance and Association Operations; promote a culture of engagement, high performance, accountability, and continuous improvement that values learning and a shared commitment to quality Partner with the HR Team to guide collaborative communication about operational changes, people strategies, introduction of new programs to be focused on timely and integrated implementation Advise the Board of Directors and the Finance and Investment Committee relating to issues, trends and changes to the operating model and delivery mechanisms Staff the Finance and Investment Committee and ensure that those charged with governance possess the financial information required to perform their duties Represent NAEYC externally particularly in financial, banking, contract and real estate negotiations and transactions Education and Experience Business, accounting or related degree required, MBA preferred Minimum 10 years' experience in a senior leadership role with external audit and internal financial management responsibilities in a high performing and evolving work environment Non-profit financial management, vendor management and related contract negotiation, federal contracting/grant financial management background preferred Minimum four years' experience managing teams with different levels of expertise; strong mentoring, coaching experience to effectively deliver professional development Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Expert use and management of Computerized Accounting Systems; MS365; ADP payroll system; Sage Intacct a plus Demonstrated business savvy; a collaborative and proactive team leader who can positively and productively contribute to and impact both strategic and tactical finance, people-related and operational initiatives Excellent judgement and creative problem-solving skills including negotiation and conflict resolution skills Exceptional communication skills: written, verbal, listening; strong interpersonal and presentation skills; ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports and peers; to effectively interface with senior leaders, NAEYC's Board of Directors and staff Position Designation(s): Business Continuity and Required Travel: Business Continuity indicates that the role is critical to business operations and may be called upon to be present in the event of an emergency or crisis. Required Travel indicates that domestic and/or international travel is a key part of this position. This role is eligible for telework. This role may be eligible for 100% remote work outside the Washington, DC metropolitan area.
