POSITION SUMMARY: The Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse serves as a resource nurse who plans, coordinates, evaluates, provides for, and delivers health care services to patients. The Medical Assistant provides support in the medical field by performing various medical and clerical activities to assure quality care and more efficient work place. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/DETAILED DUTIES: Adheres to policies and procedures of Clinic, RHS policies and procedures, nursing service manual, meeting minutes, all memos, client education, staffing policies, personnel policies and RHS nursing standards. Provides competent care to all age populations by obtaining and appropriately interpreting data, making appropriate decisions based on demonstrated knowledge of age-specific growth and development and appropriately adapting procedures and treatments. Escorts patients to exam room. Obtains patient name and date of birth to verify patient. Obtains and documents basic subjective data (chief complaint, allergies, and verification of current medications). Obtains and documents objective data (vital signs, weight, and assessment of patient's general appearance). Anticipates and prepares exam room with equipment and supplies required for visit. Assists with exam/procedures as requested. Updates patient history, summary list, medication list, etc., with each visit, obtains ABN per E-LMRP as necessary. Utilizes written RHSHC policies and procedures and universal precautions when performing laboratory/diagnostic tests as ordered by provider. Explains to patient proper preparation for procedures/tests. Obtains appropriate consents, if needed. Reports all critical lab/diagnostic test values to the provider. Performs, maintains, and documents quality controls as applicable/requested (i.e. logs, proficiency test, maintenance records, etc.). Prioritizes and organizes work tasks, while ensuring quality care and maintaining customer satisfaction. Facilitates communication among all team members regarding the patient's plan of care. Assists with provider's plan and evaluation for medical interventions. Assists in scheduling appointments and referrals when necessary. Utilizes proper procedure for administering medications and treatments with special consideration for patient safety by maintaining competency in medication administration. Documents administration of medications and treatments. Completes charge ticket to include diagnosis and supplies used. Receives phone calls from patients and assess calls as emergency, urgent, or routine. Consults provider and documents patient notification and follow-up per provider order/approved protocols. Assesses patient's/family's knowledge of health/illness. Provides patient/family education by developing, implementing, and evaluating teaching plan. Assists in selection and maintenance of patient education materials. Participates in the CQI process by serving on committees and process improvement teams. Assists in identifying, implementing and evaluating selected indicators. Assists with the maintenance and quality control of immunizations, controlled substances, medications and general stock. Assists in cost containment by maintaining adequate stock in work stations. Assists in performing basic maintenance, recalibration and troubleshooting of all clinical equipment (including lab). Reports equipment malfunction to appropriate personnel. Participates in the training, orientation, and education of new employees. Services as clinical resource person for patients, other clinic staff, and providers. Functions as a team member by providing backup when needed. Dress code includes all black or all grey scrub top and pants, with undershirt of white, grey, pink or black acceptable. No hooded jackets or sweatshirts. Scrub jackets or logo wear only for long sleeves. Friday (free) any color scrubs ok. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing or approved school for medical assistants A current Iowa license as an LPN or RN or certified as a medical assistant required. Six months previous ambulatory care nursing experience preferred. Computer skills preferred. Strong communication skills and the ability to maintain and display professionalism with customers and coworkers. Organizational skills, with attention to detail, including time management and workflow required. Advanced knowledge of nursing practice, including the ability to make sound judgments in clinical situations. Understanding of teaching/learning principles. Flexibility and adaptability.
