Position Overview: The Equipment Operator is responsible for running equipment on small to large scale ecological restoration projects across the state of Minnesota. This position requires responsible equipment operation and good communication skills to carry out project tasks both accurately and safely from start to finish. The operator position will be heavily involved in vegetation mowing on solar projects during the growing season. This position may also include a variety of other equipment operation and labor tasks as needed during the remainder of the year. Individuals applying for this position should expect significant overnight travel during the growing season (May through September). Travel includes overnight per diems for lodging and food. Individuals should expect increased hours, including overtime, during the growing season. This position is seasonal (May through September). There is potential for other year round employment outside of the growing season depending on workload and candidate availability. Duties and Responsibilities: Operate tractors, mowers, UTVs, sprayers, skid loaders, 3pt implements, and other equipment for vegetation maintenance mowing and spraying on solar projects. Equipment operation work is mostly independent or in crews of 2. Closely follow directions from MNL Project Supervisors regarding site work expectations and schedules. Maintain effective communication regarding site work with MNL supervisors and other field staff, and solar customers as needed. Adhere to rigorous solar safety, communication, and reporting protocols across different sites. Diagnose problems and perform necessary equipment repairs in the field and shop as able. Trucking/transport of equipment as needed. Maintain detailed work records and associated paperwork, including daily work logs and herbicide treatments. Train other field staff on equipment operation as needed. Operate equipment on a variety of non-solar restoration projects. Perform other duties and tasks as assigned, including but not limited to prescribed burning, site preparation, seeding, planting, erosion control, and forestry work. Required Qualifications: CDL holder for over 1 year. Must have class A CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements, with insurable driving record. Willing to acquire a commercial pesticide applicator license (paid for by MNL). Demonstrated experience with the safe operation of medium to large agricultural/forestry equipment, especially tractors, 3pt implements, and skid loaders. Experience with general maintenance and minor repair of vehicles, equipment, and tools such as tractors, mowers, pumps, sprayers, small engines, and trailers. Demonstrated ability to work independently, make sound decisions, and problem solve effectively. Ability to read and navigate maps, as well as accurately follow directions. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Basic computer knowledge, including use of a smart phone. Preferred Qualifications: Experience working in landscaping or agriculture. Familiarity with or experience in ecological restoration work, especially equipment operation for restoration purposes. Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Able to bend, stretch, push, pull, reach, and move as needed in order to complete various vegetation management duties. Typical workdays are Monday - Friday (with optional weekends depending on workload and weather) Prolonged periods of time sitting or standing. Able to work long hours, which may include some early mornings and evenings. Able to travel daily to various worksites within the state with overnight stays required. Able to travel out of state depending on project locations. Must be able to work in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat and extreme cold.
