CCANO's English as a Second Language (ESL) is an English language study program for non-native speakers. Our goal is to help improve students' English literacy so they can become confident and successful in their goals and as members of the community. CCANO's ESL program also includes the Family Literacy program, which is free of cost and open to adolescents of all language backgrounds between the ages of 10 and 17. The Family Literacy program aims to address the literacy needs of immigrant & refugee youth with the understanding that there are unique educational needs across the spectrum of adolescence that intersect and diverge in dynamic ways. This community-centered program encourages family members to work together when possible to create opportunities for intergenerational and family learning.Currently online, the Family Literacy program offers tutoring sessions with volunteer instructors, during which students can work towards language learning goals of their choosing. Sessions are available a few evenings a week to provide a flexible schedule for students.Essential Job Responsibilities: The Family Literacy Coordinator will manage CCANO's family and youth literacy programming for immigrants and refugees, as well as supervise and coordinate those involved in this programming. Work will focus initially on strengthening and sustaining the Family Literacy Project. This involves:● Organizing and expanding the delivery of youth- and family-centered English as a Second Language (ESL) curriculum● Developing and managing partnerships with local schools and community-based organizations. This should include:○ Gaining an understanding of ESL programs (in school and extracurricular) offered by local schools and organizations to youth and families○ Surveying (both qualitative and quantitative) ESL teachers, students, and parents of students in the Orleans and Jefferson Parish school systems○ Identifying gaps in local English literacy programming for youth and families and designing Family Literacy classes and curriculum to meet those needs● Developing, implementing, and overseeing effective and innovative literacy practices through individualized, classroom-based support to ESL learners such as:○ Study sessions with volunteer instructors○ Age-appropriate curriculum for youth participants that complements local public school curricula○ Support for parents who have difficulty interacting with the U.S. school system in which they have children or who are working toward completing HiSET or higher education programs themselves○ Incorporation of digital literacy into the curriculum for Family Literacy● Oversee and manage volunteers in the Family Literacy program by:○ Supervising program volunteers who work with students○ Providing support in teaching, cultural responsiveness and best practices○ Providing and receiving feedback for volunteers during check-ins● Communication with students and clients, including:○ Receiving student intake forms and tracking student data○ Sharing program details and determining student availability to attend available classes○ Scheduling adult students for pre-and post-testing and supporting the administering tests as necessary○ Communicating with students about attendance and participation in the program○ Following up with students on ESL-level placement, scheduling changes, individual needs, and learning goals○ Soliciting student feedback about their experiences in the program○ Assisting with placing students in appropriate intervention, support, or crisis services (referrals within Immigration and Refugee Services and to outside community resources and partners)● Utilizing online data platforms or systems to:○ Collect and analyze individual progress data and develop action plans in response to student needs as well as monitor intervention effectiveness○ Completing reports when needed● Working closely with the ESL Program Director, ESL Distance Learning Specialist, Site Facilitators, and Success Coach on other tasks as needed or assigned● Working closely with the Refugee Services team to accommodate client referrals
