General Job Brief The Off-Duty Public Safety Officer (ODPSO) position is a sworn law enforcement officer or firefighter working in an off-duty capacity, wearing his or her agency's uniform, while patrolling the University or University sponsored events. The ODPSO position supports Arizona Christian University's Department of Campus Safety mission by providing a deterrent to criminal activity during day to day operations, athletic events, dignitary visits, special events, and a rapid response to critical incidents. The ODPSO may provide first aid, crowd management, traffic control, and enforce violations of city and state laws. ODPSOs may work alone, with other ODPSOs, Campus Safety Guards (CSG), or Campus Safety Internship guards (CSIG). ODPSOs receive an ACU tuition benefit to off-set the costs to complete their degree, the degree of their spouse, son or daughter, adopted son or daughter, step-son or daughter. Typical Duties (The following duties are those typically required to do the job but are not intended to include all duties that comprise the job content. Typical duties are intended to illustrate the diverse and various levels of difficulty of the job.) DUTIES, TASKS, AND RESPONSIBILITIES Provide a uniform presence while patrolling the University's grounds during day to day operations, athletic events, special events, etc. Provide a rapid and tactical response to an Active Shooter or other critical incident Liaison between public safety and the University's Chief of Campus Safety during critical incidents Perform patrols (on foot, bicycle, or vehicle) Respond to calls for service on the University grounds, or property used by the University Take the appropriate action to resolve incidents (suspicious person or circumstances, criminal, fire, medical emergencies, etc.) Provide crowd management and traffic control as needed Enforce city and state laws Prepare written reports and incident logs to the Chief of Campus Safety Work minimum of two five-hour shifts or one 10-hour shift per week Work 480 hours between July 1st and June 30th the following year The job will require walking and standing for long periods of time The job could involve running, kneeling, crouching, stooping, or crawling at times The job could involve frequent and repetitive movements using your legs, hands, and wrists Vision abilities include but not limited to the ability to see things close up and at variable distances, color, peripheral and depth perception, and the ability to see things at night There could be some lifting, carrying, or moving objects 10 pounds or more Provide spiritual support and prayer to students and staff Skills, Knowledge, Abilities Strong interpersonal skills and customer service orientation Ability to remain calm under periods of intense stress Knowledge of safety procedures, safety programs, crime prevention methods, and criminal codes applicable to a university environment Ability to tactically respond to an Active Shooter or other critical incident Ability to effectively communicate verbally to individuals who are agitated or refusing to leave the University Ability to maintain confidentiality Ability to effectively communicate with students, staff, faculty, adjuncts, and guests Ability to work around college age students in a professional manner Successfully conduct security patrols, ability to detect problems and report information in a timely manner to the on-duty supervisor Minimum Qualifications Education/Certifications: Police or Reserve officer working for a law enforcement agency in Arizona Certified Police Officer as described by Arizona Peace Officers Standards and Training Board R13-4-101-118 Good standings as a certified Police Officer with Arizona Peace Officers Standards and Training Board Fire Fighters working for a fire department in Arizona Fire Fighter I and II Certifications Good standing with a fire department in Arizona
