Summary American Conservation Experience (ACE), a nonprofit conservation organization, in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS), is seeking applications for ONE Museum Collections Management Member to directly assist with the administration of the cultural resource education and preservation at the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park. Start Date: May 22, 2023 Estimated End Date: June 14, 2024 *a 56 week minimum commitment is required * Please note: This position is part time ~ 20hr/week. Location Details/Description: San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park, San Francisco, CA Located in the Fisherman's Wharf neighborhood, San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park offers visitors the sights, sounds, smells and stories of Pacific Coast maritime history. The Park includes a magnificent fleet of historic ships, a Visitor Center, Maritime Museum, Maritime Research Center, and Aquatic Park Historic District. To learn more about the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park, please visit the NPS website at: http://www.nps.gov/safr/index.htm Position Overview: The ACE Member will perform entry level projects equivalent to a Museum, Archives or Library Technician who is involved with front-line collections care. They will work primarily under the guidance and in conjunction with staff curators, archivists, and librarians. They will assist with a variety of projects in the documentation, organization, care, and preservation of Park cultural resource and research collections. Primary responsibilities will include the identification, inventory, processing, rehousing, relocation and storage of museum, archival and library collections. Additional duties may be assigned including: Identify and locate collection items during annual inventory of museum property Assist with museum exhibit installation and de-installation of collection items Assist with the intake and preparation of new, incoming collection items Attend museum, archives, or library management meetings Perform routine curatorial housekeeping Assisting with the intake and preparation of new, incoming collections. This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups. Schedule: Generally, part-time Monday - Friday, between 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Position Benefits Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~20 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $270/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly. Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a federal hiring authority upon completion of their term of service. PLC projects also include specific eligibility requirements such as age and citizenship. Housing: Housing is the responsibility of the member and not provided by ACE or the NPS. Provided Training/Orientation: ACE members will receive position specific training and an orientation outlining ACE policies and procedures, clear guidance on prohibited activities, and networks for support. Qualifications Required: Members must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident, as required by U.S. government contracts Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner. Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group. A current and valid form of ID (will be required to provide copies of IDs upon hiring) Willing to undergo and must pass the required background check including fingerprints in order to be issued a government PIV card. Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation. Preferred: Applicants for the position must be in process of or hold a degree and/or experience in museum or archival studies, art history, history, or a related discipline. A combination of relevant education and appropriate experience is also acceptable. Knowledge and skills in the principles of museum and archival practices. Knowledge of digitization, digital photography and preservation, museum or archival collection management principles and practices. Basic computer skills (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, data management, etc.) Excellent organizational, research, and writing skills. Proficient in English. Ability and willingness to work independently as well as part of a team. Deep interest in American maritime history. Physical Demands, Work Environment and Working Conditions: Physical Demands : Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, carrying, using hands to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms . Manual dexterity required for use of various tools, computer keyboard/mouse and other office equipment . Required to stoop, kneel, climb stairs, and/or crouch . Weight Lifted or Force Exerted : Frequently moves up to 25 pounds, ability to move up to 50 pounds. Environmental: Mainly indoor and occasionally outdoor, office environment conditions; indoor air quality is good, and temperature is generally controlled. Outdoor conditions can vary but generally restricted to temperate weather except when responding to emergencies. Travel: This position does not require unique travel. Environmental Conditions/Hazards: The ACE member(s) may occasionally encounter environmental conditions/hazards related to museum or archival objects including lead or other hazardous materials related to the original creation or earlier preservation techniques. The member is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner using any required PPE or other protective methods so as not to endanger self, fellow staff/members, or resources. Vehicle and Equipment Use/Safety: If a vehicle is required for the accomplishment of the duties, one will be provided by the NPS or ACE. Any tools required for the accomplishment of the duties will be provided by the NPS. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE), typically provided by the NPS, will be mandatory for any activity that requires it. Strict adherence to NPS and ACE equipment training, certification and safety protocols is required.
