Public WorksRoad & Bridge Equipment Operator Summary: Operate heavy equipment and maintain equipment and tools used in construction, maintenance and repair of county roads and rights-of-way (ROW) to provide the highest level of service within budget constraints. Road and Bridge Division: The purpose of the Road and Bridge Department is to provide a smooth, comfortable, expeditious, and safe ride for the public; to reduce such user costs as fuel, repairs, accidents, and travel time; to utilize labor, equipment, and material efficiently; and to ensure that pavement lasts as long as it should, thereby reducing future costs for rehabilitation and reconstruction.Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED, three years of experience as a heavy equipment operator.Have or obtain in a reasonable amount of time: Valid Colorado Driver’s License and CDL Class A. Current First Aid Certification. A combination of education, training, and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities is required. Key Duties: Operate heavy equipment such as motor graders, trucks, dozers and backhoes to grade roads, plow snow, haul gravel and other materials, repair bridges, install culverts and cattle guards and complete other projects required to maintain County infrastructure and rights-of-way. Serve as plow truck, haul truck and/or grader operator during the winter to plow snow, including mandatory on-call, rotating afternoon and weekend shifts. Assess equipment capabilities and decide which equipment is best suited for a particular job. Responsible for operating equipment safely and keeping equipment functioning in good repair including such tasks as conducting daily and required routine equipment inspections to identify needed maintenance and notifying mechanic of major maintenance items, also performs preventive or minor maintenance such as fluid changes, wearing edge changes, lubrication, tire changes and mechanical adjustments. May be assigned to seasonal maintenance project crews for asphalt patching, dust suppression, sweeping, mowing, crack sealing, tree trimming, or other maintenance tasks. Identify unsafe conditions on equipment, infrastructure and rights-of-way; notify supervisor of problem and if appropriate correct in a timely manner. Assist other workers in performing their duties. Train new employees. Respond politely and accurately to public inquiries regarding road and bridgework that is being performed or direct comments to supervisor as appropriate. Read and follow grade stakes and engineering plans and specifications. Other Requirements: Must have cell phone or equivalent method of contact at any time. Must pass a physical examination in order to be granted a Colorado Commercial Driver’s License. Working Environment and Physical Effort: Work is performed mostly outdoors. Must be able to work in all weather conditions. Must have the ability to perform strenuous labor for extended periods of time. Must have the ability to lift heavy parts and tools. Periodic exposure to hazardous chemicals commonly used in vehicle and equipment maintenance and road and bridge operations.
