Position Description: The Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs anticipates an opening in May 2020 for an experienced, creative and innovative team member to fill the position of Curator of Collections. This position is responsible for the curation, management and interpretation of a diverse collection related to Delaware history. The collection encompasses furniture and decorative arts, sculpture and art, household objects, textiles, and an important collection related to the Victor Talking Machine Company.In March 2020 the division completed a move to a new collections facility, the State of Delaware Center for Material Culture, which houses the state's collection, and offices for the curators, graphic artists, and education staff. Under the direction of the team manager, the curator participates with division staff in exhibition development and installation; develops and presents educational programs; provides access to the collection; collaborates with other staff and partners; works to expand the profile and use of the state collection; work will reflect best practices and national standards of an accredited museum.The curator will be responsible for the review and assessment of the historical collection for the development of a collections plan which can be used to develop ideas, story lines and programming to engage diverse audiences and to find relevance and meaning to visitors, local communities and researchers. This position performs other duties as assigned by manager and/or division director and other senior staff. Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs The Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs serves Delaware residents and visitors by identifying, preserving, and interpreting Delaware history. Our activities foster strong communities, engaged citizens, economic vitality, and a deeper understanding of Delaware's role in world history. We do this in public trust for current and future generations.The Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs operates five state museums which are accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. The division is a trustworthy, ethical, and reliable partner with organizations, agencies, and individuals with whom we have common goals. The division's vision is to actively engage our audiences in learning and to understand how Delaware history is meaningful to their lives. We seek to actively engage our audiences through exploring a diversity of historical and cultural perspectives to inform and influence decisions about the future. We want our audiences to feel welcomed, valued, and encouraged to question and explore.The five museums operated by the state include: John Dickinson Plantation, Johnson Victrola Museum, New Castle Court House Museum, the Old State House and Zwaanendael Museum.Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas: Possession of a bachelor's degree or higher in Anthropology, Archaeology, Art History, Design History, Architecture, Decorative Arts, American/World History, or Museum Studies or related field. Six months experience in museum practices such as collection management, research, exhibit design, management and handling of collections, preservation or maintenance of historic buildings, conducting museum educational programs or tours. Six months experience in cultural or historical research which includes analyzing objects/artifacts and compiling documentary summaries which provide historical contexts for exhibits, programs, tours, historical sites, and artifacts. Knowledge of project management which includes planning, developing, implementing, managing and evaluating projects to ensure objectives are met. Knowledge of interpreting laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures. Knowledge of grant writing. Additional Information Application accepted until March 11, 2020.
