Mentor-Apprentice Program (MAP) Director - (Volunteer)

Description:

Mentor-Apprentice Program (MAP) Director - Remote (Volunteer) Do you value democracy? Do you believe in the importance of preparing the next generation of journalists for a world in which truth is under assault on a daily basis? Are you in a position that allows you to volunteer your time to advance both of these causes? Then we have a unique opportunity for you. We are combining aspects of our award-winning election integrity coverage and our training program for promising young journalists. And we want you to run it. This is an opportunity to not only make a lasting difference in the lives of young journalists but also to highlight the many threats to our democracy. As the head of our election Mentor-Apprentice Program (MAP), you will lead a team of editors and experts in providing on-the-job training to up-and-coming reporters in covering the midterms under the aspect of election integrity — from voter suppression laws and gerrymandering to voting machine vulnerabilities and disinformation. Who we are: a nonprofit news organization consisting largely of volunteers What we do: cover all aspects of election integrity — from voter suppression laws and gerrymandering to voting machine vulnerabilities and disinformation Why now is the time to get involved: because US democracy is under assault and not enough people are doing anything about it It won’t be easy, and we know we ask a lot of you. But it will be incredibly rewarding, and you will make a real difference. As a reader-funded nonprofit, we are operating on a very tight budget and hope you will work pro bono while we direct every dollar we raise to putting reporters on the streets. If you are willing to commit your time from now through to the election to help see America through these troubled times, we want to talk with you. Responsibilities Act as managing editor for content produced by apprentices Teach or facilitate weekly lectures on topics related to journalism and election coverage Work with other editors, mentors, and the program coordinator to shape our election coverage, with an eye for breaking news that sets us apart from other outlets Qualifications Experience as a political journalist and/or editor Experience in teaching or in supervising and training new journalists A passion for thinking hard and digging deep; expansive knowledge of a broad range of election topics An extensive address book and a network of sources Collaborative spirit and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment Expectations You will work remotely and on your own schedule, but you must be prepared to respond and pitch in to provide guidance and editing whenever the need arises. We also ask for a minimum commitment of 15 hours a week (though doing more is not discouraged!). Because our staff is spread throughout the world, we communicate mostly through Slack and email, and team members are requested to be highly responsive in a timely manner. To Apply We will not review applications that appear to be mass submissions. To apply, send your resume and a customized cover letter explaining why you're a good fit for this position — and demonstrating that you have spent time studying our brand. If there is no option to attach a cover letter, please send a cover letter to XXXX@whowhatwhy.org. You should confirm your understanding that this is a volunteer position. Powered by JazzHR
