Job Summary: The position of Director of Radiation Safety/Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) at the University of Wisconsin - Madison (UW) and UW Health (UWH) encompasses the comprehensive management and strategic direction of the Radiation Safety Program. This pivotal role is instrumental in ensuring the minimization of radiation exposure to personnel, adhering to the principle of keeping radiation "As Low As Reasonably Achievable" (ALARA). The scope of this responsibility extends to all operations involving the use of sources or equipment that emit ionizing and non-ionizing radiation within facilities that engage with the Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) for radiation protection and health physics services.Operating under the auspices of the Radiation Safety Committees (RSC), the RSO is tasked with the crucial duty of ensuring that the Radiation Safety Program for both UW and UWH is executed in strict compliance with the institutional broad-scope license, in addition to state and federal regulations. This program is notably expansive, covering a wide array of radiation usage that includes, but is not limited to, a research reactor, particle accelerators, cyclotrons, extensive decommissioning projects, three fusion research groups, alpha emitting research, a world-renowned radiation metrology and calibration laboratory, pioneering radioactive drug research with first-in-human trials, and the forthcoming inclusion of a proton therapy center.This role is not only significant for its contribution to the advancement of radiation safety and research but also offers an unparalleled quality of life outside of the professional setting. Responsibilities: Directs the development and implementation of the institutional health safety program and strategy, supervises managerial staff and communicates unit direction to senior leadership so all work, recreation, and research can be performed safely and in compliance will all applicable federal, state, and local regulations and standards. 20% Assists in the development of strategic safety initiatives, coordinating with other areas of specialty to ensure cross-functional alignment 20% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees 20% Assists in the development of operating policies and procedures to comply with established industry regulations and unit objectives 20% Serves as the unit liaison to institutional stakeholder groups providing organizational information and representing the interests of the unit in the absence of a director 5% Lead the combined UW-Madison/UW Health radiation safety program, including setting strategic and operational goals, providing oversight and support for research laboratories and clinical service areas, including direct patient contact 5% Serves as a point of contact and liaison between UW-Madison & UW Health and state and federal government agencies regulating the use of radioactive materials and radiation producing devices (e.g., DHS, NRC, DOT, DNR, FBI, DOE, etc.) 5% Manage as a voting member, the Executive Radiation Safety, Human Radiation Use, Campus Radiation Safety, Reactor Safety, Radioactive Drug Research, Xray Safety, Research Laser Safety, & Medical Laser Safety Committees 5% Develop and manage the relationships, budget and resources which are critical for the successful implementation of the UW-Madison & UW Health radiation safety program Institutional Statement on Diversity: Diversity is a source of strength, creativity, and innovation for UW-Madison. License/Certification: PreferredDrivers License - Valid and Meets UW Risk Management Standards Work Type: Full Time: 100%This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location. Occasional nights and weekends may be required.
