POSITION SUMMARY: The Lead Operator, under the direction of the Project Manager, is responsible for operating and overseeing operations on many types of heavy equipment on various job sites. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following) Manages the day-to-day operations of the Public Works Department. Supervises staff in field and schedules work loads. Operates heavy equipment; backhoes, dozers, dump trucks, excavators and loaders. Follows company safety rules and regulations. ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: (includes, but is not limited to, the following) Moving and hauling heavy equipment and trailers on public roadways as needed. Performs light maintenance on equipment. All other job-related duties as assigned. CONTACTS: Immediate peers, peers in other departments, immediate supervisor/manager, managers in other departments, customers, executives, Board of Directors and outside vendors/service providers. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Position lifts objects over 100 pounds with team or dual lifting and frequent lifting/carrying of more than 50 pounds. Physical factors include constant sitting, climbing, use of hearing, smelling, near/midrange/far vision, depth perception, color vision, field of vision and driving; frequent standing, walking, carrying, lifting, pushing and pulling, stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching and manual handling and bending. Working conditions include constant exposure to weather, extreme heat and cold, wet/humid, noise, vibration and air quality. Tasks may be conducted during periods of inclement weather including extreme cold, heat and humidity. Potential hazards include constant moving mechanical parts and exposure to equipment; and occasional exposure to electric shock, high exposed places, chemicals, insecticides/pesticides and infectious exposure. Protective equipment and clothing needed to perform the job includes steel toe boots, safety glasses and hard hats. Tvek suits, disposable boots, dust masks, and full air respirators must be used when working on projects that may present a hazard of infectious exposure. REQUIREMENTS: Education: High School diploma or equivalent preferred. Experience: Minimum of four years of heavy equipment operation experience required. Certification/License: Must have or have the ability to obtain CDL upon hire. Must have valid driver's license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver's license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Will be required to undergo and successfully pass a background check to determine suitability for work on certain projects. Must maintain a good moral character standing. Will be required to submit and pass a pre-employment drug test as required by State and Federal Guidelines for CDL Class A license. Will be required to be subjected to random drug testing as required by State and Federal Guidelines for CDL Class A license. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must have working knowledge of underground utilities, grades, and be capable of finish grade. Must be able to carry out job as assigned in an efficient time frame. Must be able and proficient at operating backhoes, dozers, dump trucks, excavators and loaders Must have leadership skills. Must have knowledge of and be able to operate heavy equipment. Must have working knowledge of safety requirements for operating heavy equipment. Must be able to work under pressure. Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions. Position required to be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from November 1st to April 30th and must be able to respond to call-ins from supervisor or manager; including holidays and weekends. Must be able to work extended hours when needed. Native American preferred.
