U of T Engineering created ISTEP to drive change in how we prepare future engineering leaders. Our work lies at the intersection of engineering education, professional competencies and engineering practice, encompassing what and how we teach, who our students become, and what our students do. The first of its kind in Canada, ISTEP brings together existing and innovative initiatives, academic programming, scholarship and people from across the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering to create a vibrant ecosystem for instruction innovation. There are five programs within the department: Engineering Business Minor; Engineering Communication Program (ECP); Certificate in Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Small Business; Collaborative Specialization in Engineering Education (Eng Ed); and the Troost institute for Leadership Education in Engineering (Troost ILead). Troost ILead offers transformative learning opportunities that enable engineering students and young professionals to explore and develop their own intrinsic leadership potential. Through innovative and immersive programming, we empower the whole engineer to maximize their contribution. Leadership education is about learning how to effectively handle complex, human challenges that often mean the difference between success and failure. We motivate engineers to think analytically and systematically while emphasizing the importance of leadership skills — ultimately, we envision creating engineers who build a better world.
