The City is offering a Sign-On Bonus for Bus Mechanics: $500 with first paycheck and 2% of gross earnings during first year of employment at first anniversary. Candidates can complete up to 20 ASE Tests to earn up to an additional $5.00 per hour. Late night and weekend work earns an additional $1.00 per hour. Snap On and Milwaukee tools provided to all mechanics. Uniforms and Laundry Service provided. Job Summary Under general direction and in compliance with standard operating procedures and policies, performs skilled work involving the maintenance and repair of all vehicle/bus systems, including gasoline and diesel engines, battery electric vehicle drivetrains, transmissions, 12- and 24-volt electrical systems, engine and transmission computer systems, HVAC systems, and brake systems. Following Agency Maintenance Plan, performs A, B, C, D, E and F preventative maintenance routines on vehicles and equipment. Installs communications and telematic equipment into vehicles, including radios, camera systems, GPS equipment and intelligent transit system. Modifies Greenlink equipment for specific requirements. Follows work tasking on work orders and documents all work as required. Additionally, may serve as a subject matter expert on Greenlink's Safety Committee as required. Essential Functions Perform Complex Repairs and Complete Diagnostic Troubleshooting: Perform complex repairs on gasoline, diesel, and electric vehicles and shop/facility equipment to include repairs on diesel/gasoline engines, electric drive motors, high-voltage vehicle electrical system, electronic controlled transmissions, ride height suspension system, suspension linkages, steering linkages, kingpins, wheel bearings, tires, airbrake system including ABS system, hydraulic brake systems including ABS system, multiplexing electrical systems, lighting systems, Bendix air systems, heating, air conditioning systems, bus fare collection, and intelligent transit systems. Following OEM diagnostic process and procedures (including wiring diagrams, diagnostic trees, repair and parts manuals, and schematics) complete troubleshooting of vehicles, electric vehicle charging stations, and/or equipment by using software (including Cummins Insite, Allison DOC, Wabco, Proterra Diagnostic, ViriCiti, Genfare, and MaxiSys), multimeters, specialized tools, test gauges, and integrated on-board maintenance systems. After correctly identifying the defect, select the most efficient method, and repair the vehicle to OEM specification. Assure upon completion of the repair that the vehicle/equipment is correctly repaired and is safe for its intended use. Actively participate in the reporting of safety issues and concerns that are observed during the course of essential job functions. Maintain records of service and repair information within fleet maintenance software. 60% Conduct Preventive Maintenance: Complete A, B, C, D, E and F preventive maintenance service and safety checks on a variety of gasoline, diesel, and electric vehicles/buses and shop/facility equipment. Ensure all repairs of defects found during the preventative maintenance are complete before the vehicle/bus returns to service. Complete an electronic check sheets with fleet maintenance software for each service. Assure that the vehicle is properly operating and is in a safe condition for the intended use of the vehicle before returning to service. 30% Install and Repair Specialized Equipment: Complete installation of specialized equipment such as cellular data systems/modems/WiFi, emergency lighting, two-way radios, computer/mobile data terminal mounts, fare collection systems, intelligent transit systems, GPS equipment, body add-ons, and decals. Modify vehicle systems in order to enhance usability. Troubleshoot, repair, or replace these items as needed. 10%Perform other duties as assigned. Job Requirements High school diploma or equivalent. Over four (4) years of experience in hands-on vehicle repair to include at least one (1) year of experience working on transit buses or diesel engines. Preferred Qualifications Experience working on electric vehicles. ASE certified in Heavy Duty Trucks, Transit, and Automobiles. Driver's License Requirements Valid South Carolina Class B Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) with passenger endorsement within 3 weeks of hire. Valid South Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement within 3 months of hire. Performance Requirements Knowledge of: Electrical systems, air systems, chassis and suspension, HVAC, diesel engines and transmissions. Failure diagnosis, repair, and preventive maintenance practices common to buses and heavy vehicles. The procedures and technical methods utilized in the testing, repair and adjustment of radio and other electronic communications equipment. Genfare Fare collection system repair and maintenance. Intelligent Transit System repair and maintenance. OSHA and safe working practices and procedures. Electric Vehicle High Voltage Power Systems & ARC Flash Training. Ability to: Use pertinent test equipment including computers, gauges, and various types of handheld, mechanical and electronic testing or diagnostic equipment. Operate revenue and non-revenue vehicles in and around bus garage/shop areas and on and along public right-of-way. Use independent judgment and decision-making abilities to apply technical skills effectively including making quick accurate decisions to minimize downtime of vehicles. Organize work to minimize downtime. Make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects. Detect or tell the differences between sounds that vary in pitch and loudness. Work with all levels of personnel and outside contractors and maintain good working relationships. Read, understand, and implement technical manuals, troubleshooting guides, service updates, and procedures, related to the maintenance and repair of vehicles and their systems. Write reports and emails using proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech. Deal with a system of real numbers and practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement. Use hand tools, diagnostic equipment, electrical power tools, pneumatic power tools, a/c recovery machine, forklift, grinders, calipers, micrometers, drill press, and hydraulic press. Utilize specialized systems including Cummins Insight, Allison DOC, Proterra Diagnostics, and Luminator destination sign software. Work a flexible schedule that includes nights, weekends, holidays, split shifts, and a reasonable amount of overtime. Primary Work Location: Fleet maintenance shop. Protective Equipment Required: Steel-toe shoes, safety glasses, ear plugs (as needed), and gloves. Environmental/Health and Safety Factors: Occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Occasional outside work. Daily exposure to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, and physical hazards. Constant exposure to mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, electrical hazards, explosives, communicable diseases, and physical danger or abuse. Physical Demands: Continuously requires standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, reaching, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, balancing, hearing, twisting, and talking. Frequently requires kneeling, crawling, foot controls, and crouching. Occasionally requires sitting and handling. Very heavy strength demands include exerting over 100 pounds occasionally, 50-100 pounds frequently, or from 20 up to 50 pounds constantly. Mental Demands: Frequently requires time pressures, frequent change of tasks, irregular schedule/overtime, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, working closely with others as part of a team, tedious or exacting work, and noisy/distracting environment.
