Key Lakes / Great Lakes Fleet has a Direct Hire position available for a First Assistant Engineer of Steam Propelled Vessels. This licensed position will require the employee becoming a member of the AMO -American Maritime Officers. **APPLICANTS FOR THIS POSITION MUST BE QUALIFIED AND POSSES THE CREDENTIALS NEEDED FOR THIS POSITION** All Key Lakes/Great Lakes Fleet licensed seamen receive room and board while employed aboard one of our vessels. Must hold the following Merchant Mariner Credentials: First Assistant Engineer of steam propelled vessels Or any combination of steam and/or motor propelled vessels such as 1st for stream but 3rd for motor. Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) Card Valid Merchant Mariners Credential issued by the US Coast Guard Current USCG physical examination Legally eligible to be employed in the United States (Proof of identity and eligibility will be required upon employment) Reports to: Chief Engineer Department: Engine Room Job Purpose/Summary: The 1st assistant engineer maintains the ship's power plant and auxiliary equipment, both in engine spaces and on deck. Designation of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd refers to the timing of the watch and not level of expertise. Essential and Major Duties: Assists with the maintenance and repair of all the ship's equipment Delegates or assigns daily work to properly manage ships maintenance with engineers and unlicensed crew Lifts heavy machinery, rigs chain falls Maintain the ship in a safe and seaworthy condition, including fire safety and good housekeeping practices Operates large wheels and valves Serves as the throttleman when vessel is underway Listens for signals from the chadburn (telegraph or other signaling device) and communicates with the pilothouse using the ship's phone Monitors all systems in the engine room by reading numerous gauges and using sense of touch to determine hot/cold bearings Tests fuel and boiler water Assists with bunkering operations Supervises the day workers in the engine room Responsible for safety and damage/pollution control Distributes a daily and weekly safety message to each unlicensed crewmember under his or her supervision Other Functions:  Other functions as assigned by the Captain or Chief Engineer Required Qualifications:  Must hold the following Merchant Mariner Credentials: o First Assistant Engineer of steam propelled vessels o First Assistant Engineer of motor propelled vessels o Or any combination of steam and/or motor propelled vessels such as 1st for stream but 3rd for motor.  Must hold a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)  Must be willing to live 7 days a week in a remote environment with limited access to medical supplies and medical personnel  Maintain licenses and qualifications as required by regulation, both current and future  Maintain good health in compliance with USCG NVIC 04‐08 including US Coast Guard vision and hearing requirements  Must have written and verbal command of the English language Preferred Qualifications:  Has at least 5 to 6 years of sailing experience Physical Requirements: Will be required to pass the Physical Standard as published in USCG NVIC 04‐08. May be required to stand, sit, crouch or lay prone for long periods of time. Will work as necessary in confined or watertight spaces. May have to navigate tripping hazards, uneven and rolling decks, and climb both stairs and ladders. May be required to push, pull, lift, or hoist equipment up to or in excess of 127‐157 pounds. Work Environment: As expected in the Great Lakes region, incumbent employee will be exposed to seasonal weather including below freezing in the winter to high and humid temperatures in the summer. Incumbent employee may also be exposed to loud sounds and be required to wear and use hearing protection as required. Certain cargo ships may contain salt, silica, coal, and other hazardous dusts that may be inhaled and require the use of a respirator. Equipment: Works on boilers and with engine room components; also uses communication systems and telegraphs. Uses precision tools, meters, and chemical agents. Uses fall protector as necessary. Also uses small and large hand and power tools. May be required to use hoses, work‐type PFD/life jackets, SCBA/respirators, hard hats and hearing and eye protection. Emergency Functions: In emergency scenarios, may be required to perform emergency duties to save crew and ship. Responsible to be physically fit enough to perform the following non‐extensive list of self‐evacuation: Use of escape trunks, indoor emergency panels, launch life rafts, launch and operate fast rescue boat close fire doors, firefighting, life safety, including donning self‐survival equipment, fall protection, scuba, survival suit, and life jacket as the situation requires.
