We’ll discuss the following: Are there objectively right answers to moral questions, or is morality a realm of illusion or mere opinion? Do we have free will? — and does the answer to this question have any practical implications? What is a good life? One that affords pleasure? One in which you get what you want? Can a morally bad person live a good life? Is it rational to fear death? Is there such thing as a “self”? And what would it take for such a thing to persist through time? We’ll learn from and argue with such philosophers as Plato, Aristotle, Nagarjuna, Vasubandhu, Montaigne, Locke, Hume, Nietzsche, Thomas Nagel, and Derek Parfit. POSTING DATE: August 30, 2023 CLOSING DATE: September 1, 2023 The following position for a Sessional Instructional Assistant is available in the Department of Philosophy for the Fall 2023 academic session. This is an emergency posting in accordance with the Collective Agreement between The Governing Council of the University of Toronto and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 3902 Unit 3. Please note that the position below is tentative, pending final course determinations and enrolments. In accordance with the Collective Agreement, this posting is being sent as an email notification to all applicants in the Department’s Applicant Pool – all persons who have submitted an application within the past thirty-six months.
